A late night fire, started by an unattended barbecue grill, gutted a Lehi home as a family of four escaped unharmed.

Lehi Fire Battalion Chief Rick Howard said the mother and father were unaware of the blaze until they heard a popping sound coming from the attic of their home at 5732 N. Shady Bend Ave., about 9:15 p.m. Monday.

"They were watching television when they thought they heard something like hail hitting the house," Howard said Tuesday. "They got up and turned around, and that's when they could see the whole backside of the house was fully involved in fire."

The parents quickly called their two girls and evacuated, asking neighbors to call 911 as the flames, 20 feet high, tore through their home.

Howard said it appears the fire had spread from the barbecue to the home's back wall and then burned into the attic. It did not initially set off fire alarms in the home, since no smoke had developed inside the residence before the parents noticed the flames.

The house was a total loss, Howard said, but there were no injuries and the family was staying with relatives.
