Salt Lake City firefighters rescued a man from a burning building early Saturday morning.

Firefighters responded to a two-alarm fire near 1100 E. 500 South at 1:22 a.m. Saturday to find flames coming from the back of the two-story apartment building.

As they assessed the situation, the firefighters saw a resident hanging out of a second-story window, according to a Salt Lake City Fire Department news release. They extended a ladder and climbed up to safely help the 19-year-old man down.

The man was treated at the scene for minor smoke inhalation, according to the release.

Firefighters eventually extinguished the blaze, which damaged the second floor and the roof. But in the end, the fire displaced all 14 of the building's residents. The Red Cross of Utah is helping them find a place to stay.

Investigators later determined that cigarettes discarded on a deck was the likely cause of the fire.
