The Wayne County Sheriff's Office says it appears an elderly hiker died of a heart attack after fainting during a trek with his daughter in southeastern Utah's remote and rugged Horseshoe Canyon.

Sheriff's Deputy Ernie Robinson identified the victim as Karl George Mayne, 73, of Conifer, Colo.

He and his adult daughter were hiking about 6 p.m. Monday when he suddenly lost consciousness. The daughter administered CPR for about an hour, but he did not revive. A Canyonlands National Park ranger reported that a medical helicopter was dispatched to pick him up, but Mayne was pronounced dead en route to the hospital.

The daughter told authorities that she was unaware of any past heart ailments afflicting her father, though he did have "lung issues," and was taking medication for another, unspecified health problem.

Mayne's body was turned over to the State Medical Examiner's Office in Salt Lake City for an autopsy.
