Salt Lake City police are investigating a Sunday morning shooting that left an 18-year-old man dead.

The victim, Cesar Gaxiola, died after the shooting occurred in the street just west of the intersection of 600 South and 900 East. Police know who Gaxiola's suspected shooter is and have spoken to him, but he is not under arrest, Detective Greg Wilking said. There are "mitigating circumstances," the detective said, but he declined to detail them.

"The investigation is still ongoing," Wilking said. "[We] don't think there's a danger of him fleeing or anything like that. … We have to put the case together, and it'll be the decision for the D.A.'s office [whether to file charges]."

Wilking said police received several calls about the shooting at 4:30 a.m.

"We believe there was some kind of party and some of the participants in that party were possibly involved in this situation," he said. The suspected shooter is believed to live near where the party was happening but was not attending it, Wilking said.

"We have spoken with him," Wilking said. "We will continue to be in touch with him as the investigation goes on."

Two weapons were recovered from the scene and secured into evidence, police said.

Wilking said earlier Sunday that police "have all the participants involved" and were not looking for a suspect Sunday.

"We're still trying to talk to witnesses. There are people that possibly saw something," he said.

Wilking could not say whether the suspected shooter and Gaxiola knew each other prior to the shooting.

The police department is asking anyone with information about the case to call them at 801-799-3000. People can leave anonymous tips by texting TIPSLCPD and the information to 274637, with the case number 14-169340, according to the news release.
