A 70-year-old crossing guard was critically injured Thursday morning after he was struck by a car in front of Roy Elementary School.

Roy police Detective Matthew Gwynn said the guard had just stepped into the crosswalk in front of the school, 2588 W. 5600 South, at 8:12 a.m. to flag traffic to a stop. The crossing's warning lights also were flashing at the time.

An eastbound Volkswagen Beetle, traveling about 20-25 mph, struck him. The guard was thrown about 20 feet, landing on the asphalt.

Gwynn said the guard, a four-year employee, was rushed to McKay-Dee Hospital in Ogden in critical condition with head and internal injuries, including fractures. However, as of late Thursday morning, the guard's vital signs had stabilized, Gwynn said.

No citations were immediately issued and the accident remained under investigation.

Gwynn said a number of children waiting to cross the street witnessed the crash, but none was injured.

The woman driving the Volkswagen also escaped injury.
