A semi-trailer hauling a load of breakfast cereal tipped over early Tuesday morning, closing down the Salt Lake Valley's Interstate 15 to I-215 westbound exchange near 300 West.

Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Todd Royce said the driver of the semi sustained minor injuries, but was transported to the hospital to be checked out as a precaution.

"He was on northbound I-15 switching over to westbound I-215 and apparently took the ramp too fast," Royce said.

The big rig slammed into a concrete barrier wall and tipped over, its trailer bursting open and sending its load — ironically, including a substantial stock of "Lucky Charms" brand cereal — across several lanes of westbound I-215.

It was early Tuesday afternoon before the 5:30 a.m. accident scene, and toothsome debris, were cleared. For more than six hours, the Utah Department of Transportation diverted motorists to alternate routes.

Despite that warning, the Utah Highway Patrol reported several subsequent fender-benders in the Murray-Midvale areas of the freeways. No serious injuries were reported in those accidents.
