An 83-year-old Parowan man pleaded guilty to murder this week, admitting that he shot and killed his stepdaughter in July.

Nathan C. Zimmerman pleaded guilty Tuesday to first-degree felony murder, and faces 15 years to life in prison when he is sentenced on Nov. 4.

According to plea agreement documents, Zimmerman admitted that on July 10, he shot 57-year-old Janet Colleen Goode "at close range in the chest with a 12-gauge or 20-gauge shotgun."

On that day, Zimmerman's wife called 911 just after noon to report her daughter had been shot. Officers found Goode lying in the driveway of her mother and stepfather's house near 300 South and 800 West.

Goode, also a resident of Parowan, died at the scene.

Zimmerman told investigators that Goode was walking toward the house when he picked up a loaded shotgun, pointed it at the woman and fired a round at her chest when she was in range, charges state.

"Mr. Zimmerman said his intentions this day were to kill Janet Goode, and no one else," investigators wrote. "Mr. Zimmerman said he has no remorse for doing so."

No motive for the shooting has ever been publicly revealed.

Court records show that Zimmerman's wife filed for divorce on the same day of the shooting. Most information in Utah divorce cases is sealed from public view because it is considered private and no details of that filing were available.
