A man found dead Thursday morning near a Salt Lake City market had been shot to death, police said.

The body of Gustavo Jarquin, 18, was found by a pedestrian who was walking to the Acapulco market, near Indiana Avenue (900 South) and Pueblo Street (140 West) about 7:30 a.m. Jarquin's body was lying face down in the parking strip between the sidewalk and street at the northwest corner of the intersection, said Salt Lake City police Detective Veronica Montoya. The person called 911 and medics confirmed the Jarquin had died, Montoya said.

Medical examiners on Thursday afternoon concluded he died of a gunshot wound in what appeared to be a homicide.

"We really don't know anything more at this point. The investigation is just getting underway," Montoya said.

Officers on Thursday were canvassing the neighborhood for information. No one had been reported missing, Montoya said.

"We're starting from scratch," she said.
