The temperature in Salt Lake City reached 94 degrees Wednesday, setting a new high temperature for Sept. 17.
A hot high pressure system that had Utahns broiling at the midweek will soon be gone. Wednesday's sizzling temperatures will fade toward a cooler, wetter weekend along with distant Tropical Storm Odile's influence on the Southwest.
By early Thursday, thunderstorms and rain showers will begin to settle over northern Utah. Precipitation will increase through the day and into afternoon and evening hours, as winds approach 20 mph.
Utah's Dixie will see temperatures drop 5-7 degrees on Thursday, again with thunderstorms and scattered rain showers on the breezy horizon.
The Utah Division of Air Quality forecast "green," or healthy conditions for the entire state heading into the end of the work week.
The Intermountain Allergy & Asthma website rated sagebrush as "very high," ragweed "high" and chenopods at "moderate" levels on its pollen index Wednesday.
