One of two men stopped for riding bicycles without lights in the predawn, west Salt Lake City darkness was arrested after fleeing police and being found in possession of drugs and stolen property.

Salt Lake City police say officers stopped the bicyclists about 4 a.m. Sunday near 100 S. 500 West and learned one of them, a 23-year-old male, was wanted on outstanding felony warrants.

When he was notified of the warrants, the man fled on foot. Officers found him a few blocks away near the Road Home shelter in the 200 block of Rio Grande Street, where he again tried to run but was chased down and arrested.

The man was being held Monday in the Salt Lake County jail in lieu of nearly $20,000 bail, on suspicion of second-degree felony possession of stolen property, third-degree felony possession of a controlled substance and numerous misdemeanors ranging from failure to stop at the command of a police officer, possession of drug paraphernalia to possession of a non-firearm weapon by a restricted person — and riding a bicycle in the dark without a working headlight.

The second bicyclist was released after questioning.
