An 18-year-old man was behind bars Monday, being held without bail after allegedly shooting a man at a northwest Salt Lake City home over the weekend.

Salt Lake City police Detective Greg Wilkins said the suspect, booked into Salt Lake County Jail Sunday morning on suspicion of second-degree felony aggravated assault, allegedly knocked on the door of the home in the 600 North block of 300 West just before midnight Saturday.

A male victim answered the door, and when the suspect demanded to see someone the resident did not know, he became angry and aggressive.

Joined by several roommates, the resident escorted the suspect off the property and to the sidewalk in front of the home. That was when the suspect allegedly pulled a handgun and fired twice, striking the victim in the abdomen.

The second bullet went through the home's front window but did not strike anyone inside.

The victim was taken to the hospital in serious condition but was expected to recover, Wilkins said.

The suspect got into his car and drove away, but police were able to use his license plate to trace the vehicle to a West Valley City home, where the suspect was arrested about 2 a.m. Sunday.
