A southeast Salt Lake family escaped unharmed from a two-alarm fire early Monday morning.

Salt Lake Fire Department spokesman Brian Dale said the blaze at 1700 S. 2250 East was reported about 1:49 a.m. Monday. The family was alerted when their smoke alarms went off.

The flames heavily damaged the home and threatened a neighboring residence, but firefighters were able to prevent the fire from spreading beyond some minor damage to the adjacent home's siding and attic, Dale said.

No injuries were reported.

The Utah Red Cross was assisting the family with food, shelter and clothing needs.

The cause of the fire was under investigation, but it appeared to have started in the carport and spread into the home's kitchen and living room.

A damage estimate was pending.
