Police officers conducting a welfare check this week on guests staying in the honeymoon suite at a Price motel say they found equipment used in sophisticated forgery operations.
Among the evidence allegedly discovered inside the room at the Super 8 Motel were numerous electronic items used to forge documents; stolen and forged checks; stolen credit cards and Social Security cards; dozens of high quality forged Utah driver licenses with various names but bearing a photo of the same man; and "substantial amounts" of stolen mail.
In addition, police say they found methamphetamine, cocaine and a 9mm handgun that had been stolen in West Valley City.
The discovery stemmed from a request by hotel management on Monday that police check on the honeymoon suite guests, who were there past check out time and not responding to efforts to contact them.
After an officer knocked on the door, a woman opened the door and let him in, according to a Price Police Department news release. It says the officer saw a man in the room and numerous items in plain view that appeared to be used for forgeries.
The woman, 35, and man, 33, both of Salt Lake City, were arrested and booked into the Carbon County Jail on charges of drug possession, theft, possession of forgery equipment and possession of another person's ID. The man's photo was on the forged licenses, police say.
The police department is encouraging people who believe they might have been victims of recent mail theft, forgery or identity theft to contact their local law enforcement agency and reference case number 20141208 from Price City.
