Two apartments were destroyed and several more sustained smoke and water damage in an early Friday morning fire in West Valley City.
West Valley City firefighters were dispatched to the Shadowbrook Apartments, 3860 S. 1700 West, at 2:50 a.m. after a passing police officer noticed smoke coming from two units.
That officer, along with backup officers he called to the scene, evacuated residents of 20 units in all as fire crews arrived.
Flames were snuffed within 30 minutes, WVCFD said.
No serious injuries were reported, though several police officers were treated at the scene for smoke inhalation.
In all, residents of 12 units were displaced six directly as a result of the fire and damage, and six more by property managers checking on the safety of additional apartments, according to the Utah Red Cross.
The cause of the fire was yet to be determined, though damages reportedly were expected to top $250,000.
