The Salt Lake City carriage business that owned a horse that collapsed on a city street while working on a hot August day in 2013 has closed up shop.

In a message on its business voice mail, Carriage for Hire announced it was no longer in operation.

"After nearly three decades, we will be closing," the message states. "Thank you everyone for the support and the kindness that you've shown us. We are sorry we will not be operating this Christmas season."

The closure comes about one year after the collapse of one of its horses, Jerry, was captured on a video that went viral online. Jerry died of colic Aug. 23, 2013, prompting vigils and protests against the licensure of horse-drawn carriages that offer tours of downtown Salt Lake City.

The City Council subsequently voted to allow horse-drawn carriage rides to continue but enacted restrictions on the number of hours and days horses may work.

Carriage for Hire was the only horse-drawn carriage business operating downtown.
