A shooting in Kearns on Wednesday led to a high-speed police chase around Salt Lake County.

A Unified Police detective was leaving a pawn shop near 5400 S. 4100 West about 2:30 p.m. when he saw a man outside firing a gun at a group of four people, said Salt Lake County Sheriff Jim Winder. The people took cover from the gunfire, hiding behind a car until the shooter saw the detective.

The shooter got into a gold sedan, which sped away. The group of people being shot at also fled on foot, Winder said. A 46-year-old man across the street suffered a gunshot to the arm.

The detective reported the shooter's car had fled, and another UPD officer spotted it shortly thereafter. Officers chased the car north to near the Davis County line and south on Interstate 15 to Murray. A gun was thrown from the car near 4100 South and Bangerter Highway.

The chase ended when the car crashed into a Salt Lake County utility trailer near 660 West and 5900 South about 2:50 p.m.

Officers arrested five people who were in the car. They were not injured.

Police in West Jordan, meanwhile, found the group that was targeted by the shooter, Winder said. They and other witnesses said they believed the shooting was gang-related.

The victim who was shot was in fair condition.
