North Ogden • The city of North Ogden is considering issuing $50 fines to youths who skip school.

The city council will vote in the coming weeks on a daytime curfew for those under 17.

Exceptions would be made for homeschooled students or students at lunch or on the way to a doctor's appointment.

The Standard-Examiner reports that students would get a warning on a first offense. Second offenses would net students a $50 fine and appearance in youth court.

North Ogden police Officer Jeremy Hindes says police catch about half a dozen teenagers skipping school every day.

He says all police can do now is call parents or a school resource officer.

Parent Sorin Teles told the city council on Tuesday that the law would violate students' constitutional rights and schools already have truancy rules.
