Summit County: Missing man home; didn’t know he was ‘missing’
Well, there's this about that man who went "missing" from Summit County's Rockport State Park over the Labor Day weekend: He was unaware he was. Missing, that is.
The Summit County Sheriff's Office reported Thursday that Halden Efren, 20, quietly returned on his own to his Salt Lake Valley home. Family members called the sheriff Wednesday night to let deputies know they could stop looking.
"We went out to visit him," Sheriff's Sgt. Ron Bridge said. "He didn't even realize he was 'missing.' He said he'd gone on a walkabout with some new friends. He told us, 'I'm an adult and I didn't know I was supposed to check in with you.' "
Efren thanked deputies for their concern, and bid them a good night, Bridge said.
About 10 a.m. Sunday, Efren's family reported he had disappeared following an argument with his girlfriend. He was last seen walking along the Rockport Reservoir's beach.
However, video security camera footage later showed Efren in a Salt Lake City convenience store Sunday afternoon; apparently he had caught a ride back from the park shortly after leaving his family's campsite.
His family, and law enforcement, were concerned about Efren's welfare because he had recently moved to Utah from Micronesia and has limited English skills.
