Salt Lake City police say a frustrated panhandler who decided to escalate to armed robbery is now behind bars.

About 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, an 18-year-old man and his 19-year-old female companion were standing in line outside Club Sound, at 200 S. 600 West, when a male suspect approached and asked for money.

When the couple refused, the suspect pulled out a knife, demanded and received a cellphone. He then fled the scene.

Police answering a subsequent 911 call arrived soon thereafter, located the suspect and arrested him. The 26-year-old man was booked into jail on suspicion of first-degree felony aggravated robbery and two class B misdemeanor trespassing counts.
