Vernal cops: Teen fell asleep, took out pole, planters and 5 parked cars

Vernal police say a drowsy teenage driver is responsible for a crash that took out a light pole and several planters before careening into five vehicles in the parking lot of an automobile dealership.

Police spokesman Keith Campbell said accident investigators determined that the 17-year-old girl fell asleep at the wheel of her 2010 Ford Expedition early last Saturday morning while traveling westbound on Main St. near 300 West.

The SUV crossed both eastbound lanes, struck the light pole, the planters and then smashed into the cars parked at Showalter Ford. Three of the five vehicles sustained extensive damage, the other two "moderate" damage, Campbell said Tuesday.

The teenager, who escaped without serious injury, was cited for failure to operate a vehicle in a single lane.
