A rescue operation for a boy scout who fell off a cliff near Smithfield's Birch Canyon was underway Tuesday evening.

A Life Flight helicopter from Intermountain Healthcare flew to the scene and had been preparing to hoist the scout to a nearby hospital, but the helicopter turned around when it was determined that the injury was not as serious as first believed, according to Cache County Sheriff's dispatch.

Medical personnel were on the scene attending to the scout, who appeared healthy enough to be able to walk back to safety, dispatch said.
