Some new roadwork is expected to cause significant delays — and some big changes in traffic flow — on Bangerter Highway in Riverton and U.S. 40 in eastern Utah in coming days.
As early as Tuesday, traffic will be shifted at the intersection of Bangerter Highway and Redwood Road in Riverton to accommodate construction of a new freeway-style intersection there, similar to one at 7800 South and Bangerter.
Through traffic on Bangerter and Redwood still will be able to travel through the work zone. However, turns from Redwood to eastbound Bangerter will not be allowed during construction, nor will turns by westbound Bangerter traffic onto southbound Redwood Road.
To allow drivers to make such turns, crews have constructed a new temporary road connecting Redwood Road to Bangerter at about 13900 South. More information on the temporary configuration is available online at udot.utah.gov/go/bangerterredwood.
The temporary road and traffic shift are scheduled to remain in place through next spring, according to the Utah Department of Transportation.
Meanwhile, UDOT is also warning drivers on U.S. 40 between Daniels Summit, east of Heber City, and the Colorado border to expect significant delays and plan ahead.
Beginning Friday, U.S. 40 is scheduled to be reduced to one lane in each direction near Daniels Summit. Pilot cars will be escorting traffic through the construction zone at reduced speeds on Friday, and next week from Wednesday through Aug. 15.
U.S. 40 also is scheduled to be reduced to one lane in each direction in two 10-mile-long sections for paving, one between Roosevelt and Vernal, and one between Naples and Jensen.
Where the road is too narrow to maintain one lane open in each direction, flaggers will direct traffic. Restrictions in those spots are scheduled each Sunday through Thursday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. until early September.
Work also is continuing on Interstate 15 from North Salt Lake to Farmington, where lanes have been narrowed. Overnight, the freeway is reduced to one lane in each direction as crews work to widen the freeway and reconstruct several bridges and interchanges.
In addition, city streets within the project are frequently closed under I-15 for bridgework during nighttime hours.
UDOT urges use of alternate routes, including Legacy Parkway.
