Search and rescue located a missing elderly hiker near a Wasatch County mountain Friday evening.
Helicopters and officers with three agencies scoured the heavily wooded Iron Mine area, southeast of Kamas for Russell Carson, as a slow-moving storm brought rain to the area.
The 76-year-old's friends had last seen him Friday, and when they went looking for him, they found his vehicle in the area, according to a Wasatch County Sheriff's Office news release.
Forest Service personnel, deputies and search and rescue crews from both Wasatch County and Summit County searched the rugged terrain, finding the man at about 5 p.m., disoriented and suffering from exposure about a mile up the hill from his vehicle, according to a later release. It stated he had fallen, causing an injury severe enough to prevent him from hiking out.
A Life Flight helicopter transported the hiker to Intermountain Medical Center with injurues that were not life threatening.
The release adds, however, that the man would likely "not have survived another night on the mountain, where temperatures drop into the [30s]."
