An 11-month-old girl died Friday after being found in a car in Southern Utah.
About 1:07 p.m. Friday, Hurricane emergency responders found the infant near 50 E. 500 North, where she had been left by a family member in a car seat in a vehicle that was not running, according to a news release from Hurricane police.
Police said the child was inside the vehicle for "a substantial period of time."
The infant was not breathing and was unresponsive, but first responders began CPR. After the paramedics arrived, she was taken in a medical helicopter to Dixie Regional Medical Center in extremely critical condition, where she died, according to police.
"This incident is very tragic and our hearts go out to those involved, especially the family," the release reads. "The temperature in a vehicle can rise substantially very quickly, which makes it a very dangerous situation."
Temperatures in Hurricane would have been close to 93 degrees by 1 p.m., according to sensors monitored by the National Weather Service.
Investigators had conducted several interviews by late Friday afternoon, but the investigation was active and ongoing, police said. Investigators are waiting on an autopsy by the state Medical Examiner's Office before ruling whether the child died from the heat.
