Unified Police have identified the victim and suspect in a Friday homicide at a Millcreek area home.
The homicide victim is Dennis Robbins, 70.
The suspect is his son, Christopher Lynn Robbins, 29.
Christopher Robbins was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail on suspicion of second-degree felony manslaughter.
The investigation into the apparent beating death of the victim was complicated when a member of the victim's family said the home might contain explosives.
However, after bomb experts combed the house at 4465 S. Mathews Way (4115 East), UPD Lt. Justin Hoyal said no explosives had been found.
Hoyal said the case began as a domestic violence complaint called in at 6:15 a.m. from the home.
When officers arrived, they found the elderly victim dead from an apparent "violent physical assault." Details of the deceased's injuries were not released.
Hoyal said police arrested the victim's son at the scene.
It was while processing the crime scene that officers were "provided information [by family members] that there may be explosives in the home," Hoyal said.
Christopher Robbins has a history of mental health-related problems, according to court records. In September 2004, after pleading guilty in Ogden's 2nd District Court to a third-degree felony count of enticing a minor over the Internet, Robbins attempted suicide.
He subsequently was sent to Utah State Prison for a 90-day evaluation, after which he was sentenced to six months in jail and 36 months probation.
In 2006, he was sentenced to probation after pleading guilty in Utah County Justice Court to class B misdemeanor sexual abuse of a minor.
In September 2011, he pleaded guilty to a class A misdemeanor count of failure to register as a sex offender, for which he was sentenced to a year in jail with all but 10 days suspended, and a year's probation.
