The Uintah County Sheriff's Office confirmed Wednesday it is investigating as a homicide a shooting incident that left a man dead and a woman hospitalized.

Undersheriff John E. Laursen said that just before midnight Tuesday, deputies were dispatched to an address just north of Vernal, near 2600 North 500 East, on a report of gunfire.

They found Curtis Dale Hardinger, 34, of Vernal, with a single gunshot wound to the chest. He was transported in very critical condition to Ashley Regional Medical Center, but died shortly thereafter.

A woman at the residence also was transported to the hospital for treatment of unspecified injuries. Her condition was not released.

Laursen said a "person of interest" had been identified and was being sought, but cited the ongoing nature of the investigation in declining to release further details.
