A truck loaded with car batteries overturned on a south Davis County freeway on-ramp Tuesday, shutting down the access point to Interstate 15 for more than an hour.

Utah Highway Patrol Trooper Chris Jones said the truck's driver had suddenly applied his brakes and swerved while entering the ramp from Highway 89 to southbound I-15 at 8:49 a.m.

The truck flipped onto its top, dumping approximately 20 batteries onto the asphalt. An unspecified number of the batteries then leaked acid onto the road surface.

What caused the driver to suddenly brake was under investigation.

UHP closed down the ramp while Utah Department of Transportation crews worked to neutralize the acid, do cleanup and clear the wreckage and debris.
