A St. George teacher would have had a brand new lab for her next batch of middle school students in a few weeks.
But Terri Lusk died after she was hit by a vehicle while out on a jog Friday morning. Washington County School District Superintendent Larry Bergeson confirmed the Dixie Middle School science teacher's death Saturday.
Lusk was jogging on Red Hills Parkway with another person when she was hit, said Bergeson, who estimated the accident occurred about 7:30 a.m. Lusk later died at the hospital, he said.
"She was a great teacher. Not just a good one, a great one," Bergeson said. "She was always willing to help out, always positive, very energetic, always a smile — the students loved her."
Her students tested well, and she cared for them, the superintendent added. Lusk would have had new resources to teach them with when school resumed on Aug. 11, since the district just finished its new Dixie Middle School.
"It's very disheartening," said Bergeson. She also ran the clock at basketball and volleyball games, as well as wrestling matches, a job that takes someone who "has ice in their veins and composure enough [in the face of] the high pressure and intensity of close games," Bergeson said. "She was the best. We're going to miss her."
She had been with the district at least 14 years, and has two children in the school system, the superintendent said. The district will be scrambling to replace her, he said.
The St. George police were not available for comment Saturday.
