Salt Lake City police say they arrested a man and woman after each attempted rob a downtown resident early Monday morning.
The male victim, who lives across the street from the Road Home shelter at 210 S Rio Grande Street, said he went toward the shelter in search of a cigarette. Instead, he was confronted by a large, 43-year-old male suspect who demanded $100.
The victim told police he backed away and, as the suspect shouted and continued demands for cash, ran to a nearby TRAX light rail station where Utah Transportation Authority employees were cleaning the platform.
No sooner than he arrived there, a 42-year-old female suspect also demanded $100 and began pushing him when he refused.
UTA employees called 911, and both suspects — believed to be a couple — were soon in police custody.
The two were booked into Salt Lake County Jail on suspicion of attempted robbery, as well as outstanding warrants.
