Police are now investigating a "suspicious death" of a woman at a downtown Salt Lake City hotel as a homicide.

The body of 34-year-old Holly Nicole Carges was found Thursday morning inside a room at the Royal Garden Inn, 154 W. 600 South. The room reportedly was in a section of the hotel not currently in use by registered guests.

Salt Lake City police Detective Dennis McGowan could not initially reveal why detectives determined Carges' death was a homicide, or the means by which she was thought to have met her end.

Reached by phone Friday morning, the victim's father, Thomas Monk, of West Valley City, said he did not know why someone would have wanted to harm his daughter.

The body was turned over to the state Medical Examiner's Office for an autopsy, but results were not immediately available.

Police did not release any details about a suspect or suspects in the slaying, but did issue a plea to the public to call SLCPD at 801-799-3000 with any information on the crime.
