Driver in fiery I-80 semi crash remains critical
First Published Jul 17 2014 12:34 pm • Last Updated Jul 17 2014 09:51 pm

A West Jordan trucker remained in critical condition Thursday, the day after he was injured in a fiery collision with another semi-trailer rig in Echo Canyon near the Utah-Wyoming border.

Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Todd Royce said the condition of 44-year-old Roger Davidson, who was flown from the Interstate 80 crash by helicopter to University Hospital in Salt Lake City, was unchanged.

The crash occurred about 5 a.m. Wednesday when one westbound semi rear-ended the other, which had partially pulled over to the side of the road with a mechanical problem.

The accident — at milepost 182, about 15 miles west of the Wyoming state line — resulted in closure of the westbound lanes of the freeway to the state line well into Wednesday night.

It was one semi’s load of car batteries and the other big rig’s load of several hundred gallons of cleaning chemical, known as "ACID Magic," that fueled an intense blaze that destroyed both rigs and damaged the road’s surface.

UDOT crews were called to the scene to repave the affected section once it had cooled down.
