Two men suspected of shoplifting at a Kmart in West Valley City fired shots into the store’s ceiling on Friday when employees tried to stop them, police say.

The two were leaving the store at 1770 W. 4100 South about 4:30 p.m. when they were confronted by loss prevention employees, according to Roxeanne Vainuku, public information officer for the West Valley City Police Department. She said the suspects produced handguns, fired two to three shots, then ran out of the store.

The two got into a silver or gray Toyota Camry or Corolla with a white license plate and one of them fired another shot as they left the parking lot and drove west on 4100 South, Vainuku said.

The suspects were described as Hispanic males 25 to 35 years old of medium height and build. Both were wearing jeans; one was wearing a gray T-shirt with the word "Army" on it and the other a blue T-shirt.

Investigators have released surveillance video of the two suspects entering the store. Anyone with information is asked to call West Valley City police at 801-840-4000.
