A 7-year-old boy drowned Sunday in the Cottonwood Heights Recreation Center pool.

Just before 2:30 p.m., a swimmer saw the boy underwater and brought this to the attention of the lifeguards, said Cottonwood Heights Police Sgt. Corbett Ford. The lifeguards brought him out and, along with help from two off-duty medical professionals, tried to save his life.

The police and Unified Fire Authority arrived and took him to Intermountain Medical Center in critical condition, but he died later that afternoon, Ford said.

"It's an unfortunate, tragic circumstance that occurred," Ford said. "[The lifeguards] did everything they possibly could."
