Five people have died and two more critically injured in a head-on crash north of Monticello.

A van with five people aboard crashed head-on with a sports car on U.S. Highway 191, about 15 miles north of Monticello, about 2:30 p.m. Sunday.

Both people in the sports car were killed and three of the five people in the van died as well, according to the Utah Highway Patrol. The other two people in the van are in critical condition, the UHP adds.

While more details remain scarce, UHP investigators believe the van had been trying to make a pass before crashing into the sports car.

The deaths mark the second fatal crash over the holiday weekend. The Fourth of July is historically the deadliest holiday weekend in Utah. A woman and her two daughters died Saturday on Interstate 80, about 30 miles east of Wendover, after their Chevy Suburban crashed head-on into a wrong-way pickup truck, according to the UHP.
