A man who allegedly stole an RV from a Sunset dealership early Saturday led police on a chase along Interstate 15 before being stopped by spikes laid on the highway in Salt Lake County.
After the RV was disabled, the suspect refused to come out of the vehicle. Members of a Utah Highway Patrol Special Emergency Response Team (SERT) then tossed a tear-gas canister into the vehicle, Sunset police Officer Chad Campbell said. The suspect was then arrested.
The pursuit began about 4 a.m. after a Sunset officer saw an RV without license plates being driven out of the Sierra RV dealership, Campbell said. The officer tried to initiate a traffic stop but the driver took off.
The suspect got onto Interstate 15 and drove south through Clinton, Clearfield and Layton, Campbell said. The Sunset officer then terminated the chase; Farmington police officers picked it up for a short time before they also stopped pursuing the RV.
The Davis County Sheriff's Office continued to chase the vehicle, and UHP attempted several times to spike the RV, Campbell said. Spikes at 4500 South eventually caused the RV to stop at 5900 South.
The suspect placed cushions against all of the RV's windows and would not come out of the vehicle at first. The standoff, which closed southbound lanes, ended at about 7 a.m. with the 32-year-old suspect finally being taken into custody.
