A Nephi man was killed Saturday when he was struck by a car at the Delta Demolition Derby, the Millard County Sheriff's Office said.

The victim was Robert Steele, 50, who was serving as a visiting official at the derby, which was held at the Millard County fairgrounds, the sheriff's office said in a written release.

The accident occurred during a heat, which Steele was observing from behind a dirt berm, the release says. It says a derby car was struck by another car, which went over the berm and hit Steele.

An ambulance crew on standby at the event took Steele to Delta Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The incident is under investigation.
