Orem has hired a new police chief.

Longtime Orem police officer Gary Giles on Tuesday was named the new chief of the department. He served as an officer in Orem for about two decades until 2012, when he became police chief in Portland, Texas.

Giles replaces former Chief Michael Larsen, who retired in 2013. He will take office on Aug. 4 and will oversee the department’s re-establishment after the City Council voted in March to separate police and fire departments, which had functioned under a single department of public safety.

"He will be a tremendous asset and resource to the police department and the entire community moving forward," said City Manager Jamie Davidson.
