A 12-year-old South Salt Lake girl whose weekend disappearance prompted an interstate missing person search was in custody Monday morning.
South Salt Lake police spokesman Gary Keller said that Stevie Rae Shane and another, 14-year-old girl were taken to Youth Services after the 12-year-old called her grandmother for a ride.
It turned out that the girls, who had told friends they were going to Las Vegas with an older boy known only as "Brandon," were at a Millcreek area home.
Keller said it did not appear the girls had actually left the state, and may have been left at the home due to the widespread media attention and search efforts.
The mysterious "Brandon" remained at large. "At this point, we don't even know if that's his real name," Keller said.
The grandmother, called by the 12-year-old about 3 a.m., picked up the girls and turned them over to authorities.
Keller said both girls were reported to be safe and appeared unharmed, but they would be questioned by detectives about their three-day absence.
Earlier, police had broadened their search for Shane after learning she, the 14-year-old and the boy had indicated they had access to a vehicle and were going to Las Vegas.
