A brush fire, whipped by gusty winds, erupted along Interstate 15 late Friday morning and threatened to move toward homes in the town of Santaquin before crews extinguished it.

Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Todd Royce said the fire, on the west side of southbound I-15's Exit 244 off-ramp, was reported at 9:24 a.m.

Due to heavy smoke and poor visibility, UHP shut down the off ramp until the flames were doused. By 10:15 a.m., the road and ramp had reopened.

Utah County public safety dispatchers confirmed that crews acted quickly keep the blaze from burning into housing areas in Santaquin. No homes were reported damaged.
