A 79-year-old man who suffered head injuries last week in a hit-and-run accident has passed away, Salt Lake City police say.

Frank Martinez, who died Wednesday, was walking in a parking lot at 716 N. 900 West about 1:30 p.m. Saturday when he was struck by a sedan, which left the area, according to a police report. The report says that a short time later, bike officers were waved over to a vehicle at 940 W. 400 South with a suspected drunken driver inside.

The car was a sedan with front end damage and the officers — who made the connection to the hit-and-run — arrested the driver, 44-year-old Porifirio Zamora-Sepulveda, on suspicion of driving under the influence, hit-and-run and driving without a license.

Authorities expect to file negligent homicide charges against Zamora-Sepulveda next week, the report says.
