Businesses in both West Bountiful and Bountiful were evacuated into early Tuesday afternoon because of a natural gas leak at 175 N. 500 West.

By 1:15 p.m., Questar repair crews had completed capping the gas line, which had been ruptured Tuesday morning by a crew working on underground Highway 89 utilities — and all businesses were told they could open along 500 West.

But the stores may be without gas service, and 500 West will remain closed to traffic while peripheral repairs are completed.

West Bountiful police said employees were evacuated earlier from the Shopko complex and at a nearby Costco store.

Questar spokesman Darren Shepherd said the 4-inch line was ruptured by a contractor boring in the area about 9 a.m.

Questar crews were rushed to the scene and labored for hours to secure the scene and cap the line in both directions. After shutting off the flow, crews began checking for isolated pockets that could be left in the ground or nearby buildings.

Shepherd said it could take a couple days to complete all repairs, including asphalt replacement work.
