An Arizona man was booked into the Salt Lake County jail on multiple felony counts after he allegedly tried to kidnap a 3-year-old boy off a west Salt Lake City street.
Police said the attempted abduction took place about 9:20 p.m. Saturday near 400 N. Pamela Way (about 1800 West) when the 32-year-old suspect pulled up to the curb and tried to entice the boy inside his vehicle.
However, several adults nearby saw the incident and intervened. The suspect then threatened to shoot the boy's rescuers, driving up and down the street uttering threats and making motions as if he was about to draw a weapon from the seat next to him.
Officers responding to a 911 call arrived, quickly located the suspect and his car and stopped it, only to learn the Nissan Maxima had been stolen out of West Valley City.
No firearm was found in the suspect's possession.
The man was arrested and remained behind bars Monday in lieu of more than $27,000 bail on suspicion of second-degree felony attempted child kidnapping and auto theft counts, third-degree felony aggravated assault and numerous misdemeanors including driving while under the influence of drugs or alcohol, possession of burglary tools and driving on a suspended license.
