Sierra Newbold Playground is opening Friday
The playground bearing Sierra Newbold's name is about to open.
The Sierra Newbold Playground shares a name with the 6-year-old girl who was abducted from her home in 2012 and killed.
West Jordan city officials will hold a grand opening for the playground, in Ron Wood Park at 5900 W. New Bingham Highway, at 2:30 p.m. Friday.
Sierra's mother, Kathy Newbold, is expected to attend the grand opening, along with Utah Jazz President Randy Rigby, West Jordan Deputy Police Chief Kyle Shepherd and West Jordan Mayor Kim Rolfe.
The playground is about 13,000 square feet and will include a rubberized surface that is wheelchair accessible, as well as ramps up to decks that have accessible play options and a transfer module so children can get onto the equipment.
"This is a very special playground that celebrates children of all abilities," Rolfe said in a statement. "It's fitting to name it after this special little girl to serve as a reminder to cherish the children in our lives."
The West Jordan Exchange Club will sell balloons to raise money for the playground and draw awareness to child abuse prevention, according to a news release.
