The Utah Highway Patrol had a busy Memorial Day weekend, with troopers making nearly 7,000 traffic stops and dealing with more than a hundred crashes throughout the state, including a rollover that resulted in a death.
UHP statistics released on Tuesday show the agency stopped 6,892 vehicles from Friday through Monday. Those contacts included 3,734 speed-related stops and 353 seat belt-related stops.
The agency arrested 56 people suspected of drunken driving and 43 others on alcohol-related charges, such as underage drinking or having an open container in the vehicle. Crashes totaled 110 over the long weekend.
The fatality occurred early Saturday when a Kaysville man lost control of his Toyota Sequoia while driving on Interstate 15 in Clearfield and the SUV rolled, according to the UHP. Michael Riley, 36, suffered numerous broken bones and his wife, Rebecca Riley, 35, was killed.
The couple's four children, ages 8, 5, 3 and 6 months, escaped with minor injuries. Troopers said that while Rebecca Riley was wearing a seat belt, it was improperly attached with the upper strap behind her back at the time of the accident.
Troopers investigated about 90 accidents in each of 2013 and 2012, according to the UHP. Three people died in highway crashes in 2013, while there were no fatalities during the 2012 Memorial Day weekend.
