Two people died and their two grandchildren were critically injured during an ATV wreck near the San Rafael Swell on Sunday.
American Fork residents Hubert Roger Issel, 70, and his 64-year-old wife, Alana Lea Issel, were killed in the accident, the Emery County Sheriff’s authorities reported Tuesday.
Two of the couple’s grandchildren, ages 7 and 8, were critically injured and transported by medical helicopters after the crash, authorities said in a news release.
The four were riding on an established trail near the west end of Eagle Canyon, east of the town of Moore, when they came to a steep, rocky edge in the trail, according to the news release.
The steep section caused the ATV — a Can-Am side-by-side driven by Hubert Issel — to roll down the trail and then off an 80-100 foot cliff to a canyon floor, according to the news release.
The accident was reported at 3:10 p.m. on Sunday.
A Department of Public Safety helicopter was expected to remove the ATV on Tuesday, according to the sheriff’s office.
