A homeowner’s son helped apprehend a pair of suspected burglars in Cottonwood Heights.

Early Wednesday morning, the duo were allegedly stealing tools and food from a freezer out of the family’s detached garage, near Creek Road and Danish Road.

About 3:20 a.m., the homeowner and his 25-year-old son spotted the men — but when the men tried to flee, the son grabbed hold of one of them and a fight ensued, said Cottonwood Heights police Sgt. Gary Young.

The son was able to detain the suspected burglar until police arrived. The 23-year-old suspect suffered injuries "consistent with a fisticuffs," the sergeant said.

The other suspect reportedly tried to call the alleged accomplice, a phone call that gave officers the other 23-year-old’s name and led to his arrest sometime later, Young said.

Police suspect they may be tied to other thefts in the area and are investigating that angle as well, Young added.
