North Logan • A man brandishing two handguns walked into the emergency room at Cache Valley Hospital in North Logan and was shot when he confronted a law enforcement officer, police said Friday.

The suspect, who was shot several times, was identified as 34-year-old Jason James Burr, of North Logan.

The officer who fired the shots was with Adult Probation and Parole, according to Logan Police Chief Gary Jensen, who was assisting North Park police by answering reporters' questions.

"He [the gunman] was met by an officer and challenged and ultimately shot by the officer," Jensen said.

North Park Police Chief Kim Hawkes, whose agency covers North Logan and neighboring Hyde Park, said the incident began at about 8:10 a.m. when Burr entered the hospital made unspecified demands and produced two handguns.

Hospital security officers rushed to the scene even as the facility was locked down, Hawkes said.

Hospital security tried to talk down Burr, but about that time he confronted one of two AP&P agents who were in the hospital foyer. The suspect allegedly pointed his weapons toward the agent and four shots rang out.

Hawkes said Burr was struck three times.

Hawkes was uncertain if any shots were fired by Burr or if his gun was loaded. But the chief said that only Burr was wounded.

Burr was flown to University Hospital in Salt Lake City in critical but stable condition.

Hawkes said police were still investigating "the whys" of the episode.

The chief noted that no one else was in the emergency room waiting room at the time.

Utah Corrections Director Rollin Cook said at a noon news conference that the AP&P officers happened to be at the hospital because a parolee was there receiving treatment.

Both AP&P officers have been placed on administrative leave, which is the protocol after a shooting incident, officials said.

Burr's ex-wife, Rebecca Burr, who was at his home Friday afternoon to pick up his four children — two each from his previous and current marriages — told The Salt Lake Tribune she had "no idea" why Jason Burr would go to the hospital with guns.

A search of Utah court records shows that, in addition to some traffic citations and a 2001 conviction for class C misdemeanor intoxication, Burr was charged in 2010 with three counts of second-degree felony drug possession and three counts of third-degree felony falsely obtaining a prescription.

Burr pleaded guilty in 1st District Court to two third-degree felony counts of falsely obtaining a prescription and the other counts were dismissed.

He was sentenced to 30 days in jail and three years' probation. He also was ordered to complete drug and alcohol counseling and pay an $800 fine.

Burr's probation was terminated in October 2011.

Last year, responding to a motion filed by Burr, a judge reduced his convictions from third-degree felonies to class B misdemeanors, according to court records.

By 11 a.m., the hospital was reopened, but patients who would normally go to the emergency room — which was being processed by crime scene investigators — were being diverted to other hospitals.

North Park police responded to the initial report of a man with a gun, as did officers from Logan City, Cache County Sheriff's Office, Smithfield, Utah Highway Patrol and Utah State University.
