Draper police investigating bus driver in sexual abuse of Sandy kids
Draper police are now investigating a Canyons School District bus driver accused of sexually abusing special-needs preschoolers on his Sandy bus route.
Detectives this week received a call from a concerned parent who said that the driver also had a bus route in Draper, said Draper Deputy Police Chief John Eining on Thursday.
Eining did not know how many children were on the Draper route or their ages. No allegations of misconduct have been made there, Eining said.
However, police in Sandy have received claims that several children, ages 3 to 5, were molested by the male bus driver. Investigators have submitted a case, including surveillance video evidence, to the Salt Lake County district attorney's office, said Sandy police Sgt. Jon Arnold.
Canyons School District put the driver on leave April 24, the day after hearing allegations that he abused Altara Elementary School students.
The driver later resigned, said Canyons School District spokeswoman Jennifer Toomer-Cook.
Before submitting their case to prosecutors, a Sandy police detective spent 40 hours reviewing surveillance footage from three months of bus rides, Arnold said.
Eining said police first learned on Tuesday that the driver also had a bus route in Draper.
The school district did not notify Draper police of the route, Eining said. But school district officials were gathering passenger lists and other materials on Thursday, Eining said.
"They were more than willing to give us that information," Eining said.
Toomer-Cook declined to comment on the driver's routes or the scope of the investigation because the case is pending. She added that the district reported the claims to the police agency that had jurisdiction over the location of the allegations.
"We received a report and took it very seriously," she said. "... If there are parents who have questions or concerns, we welcome them to contact us. If they believe they have anything they need to report to police they should do so."
