A 31-year-old Salt Lake City woman is on life support after a traffic crash in a South Salt Lake construction zone.
The woman was a passenger in a Chevy Malibu on 700 West near 3800 South about 2:30 a.m. Saturday, said South Salt Lake police spokesman Gary Keller. The lanes jog east there because of road construction, Keller said. The Malibu was traveling north in the southbound lane, Keller said.
A Dodge Durango was carrying a family of five south when the driver noticed the oncoming Malibu, said. The Durango's driver stopped, but the Malibu continued north until it swerved at the last minute, Keller said.
The rear of the Malibu struck the Durango, causing the Malibu to roll over. The passenger was not using a safety belt and was partially thrown from the car, Keller said. The woman was flown to a hospital, where she is on life support, Keller said.
The 24-year-old woman who was driving the Malibu suffered injuries that were not life threatening. The lanes through the construction zone are "well-marked," Keller said, and police are investigating the crash as a possible DUI.
The family in the Durango was not injured, Keller said.
