Four people were injured in a South Salt Lake crash that was expected to shut down traffic in a major intersection into the evening on Thursday.
Two men were in a pickup truck that witnesses saw speeding east on 3300 South about 2:20 p.m. when it approached 900 West, said South Salt Lake police spokesman Gary Keller.
An SUV occupied by two women was in the intersection when the pickup struck its passenger side.
The SUV spun in the intersection, while the pickup crashed into a bus stop shelter on the south side of the street and rolled, Keller said. The two men were able to crawl out of the truck but were critically injured and taken to a hospital, Keller said.
As of Thursday evening, one of the men remained in critical condition with severe injuries to his arm. The other man had improved and was in serious condition.
The two women in the SUV suffered serious injures and also were taken to a hospital, Keller said. They were later upgraded to fair condition.
A person who had been at the bus stop had boarded a bus seconds before the crash occurred and was not injured, Keller said, dispelling reports that a pedestrian was hurt in the wreck. However, the bus stop was destroyed.
Officers had closed all eastbound traffic at the intersection, and the area had become heavily congested as of 4 p.m., Keller said. Motorists are urged to avoid the intersection until at least 7 p.m., when investigators hope the scene will be cleared.
